McLaren cumple 40 años en Mónaco

El 22 de mayo de 1966, hace ya cuarenta años, Bruce McLaren, piloto de Fórmula 1 desde 1958, debutaba con su propio equipo precisamente en Mónaco.

Era la primera prueba del nuevo Mundial que tras 20 años cambiaba de motores de 1,5 litros a propulsores de 3.000 centímetros cúbicos, lo que permitía a novatos como el neozelandés aventurarse a empezar de cero.

Así McLaren se colocaba al volante de su monoplaza M2B con un motor Ford importado de las 500 millas de la Indy.

Fue el inicio de una de las escuderías más laureadas de la historia de la Fórmula 1, que empezó pintada de blanco con una raya verde por ese cinematográfico motivo, pero que tuvo en el naranja su gran aliado hasta la llegada de la era de los patrocinadores en 1968.

En los años setenta llegaron los primeros títulos mundiales con Emerson Fittipaldi (1974) y James Hunt (1976), pero el equipo declinaba por la edad del jefe Ted Meyer, necesitaba entrar en una nueva era que llegó en septiembre de 1980 con la compra del equipo por parte de F2 Project 4 de Ron Dennis, ayudado por el dinero del magnate saudí Mansour Ojieh.

En esta década llegó la apoteosis del equipo con innovaciones como el chasis de fibra de carbono y motores turbo con Porsche que trajeron otros tres títulos mundiales (84 a 86), reclamo perfecto para la era Honda con el 'dream team' Prost-Senna que trajo otra tacada de títulos mundiales (88-91).
